In August, US Ambassador to the UN, Nikki Haley, travelled to Vienna to discuss Iran’s nuclear activities with the International Atomic Energy Agency, the UN-affiliated atomic energy bureau. In 2015, the P5+1 nations and the European Union finally agreed on a framework to limit Iran’s nuclear activities, over fears that plans for nuclear power may be part of a covert “dual-use” nuclear weapons program.

Early on the 5th June, Bahrain cut its diplomatic ties with Qatar and soon after came the sound of dominos falling as other Gulf and African countries followed suit. The four key belligerents in this rift – Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, the UAE and Egypt – then released 13 demands on the 22nd June, through Kuwait who remained neutral and took on the role as mediator, that were to be fulfilled within 10 days.

The ongoing Rohingya crisis in Myanmar has taken a drastic turn for the worse in recent weeks. Conditions in Rakhine State – the province where the Rohingya population is mostly concentrated – have been deteriorating over the past year, with reports of extra-judicial killings, torture and other crimes against humanity being perpetrated by the Myanmar military under a media blackout which also prevented access to humanitarian aid agencies.
